Eating Locally

At La Thiaumèrie we offer evening meals by prior arrangement, which after a long journey from the UK or following an overseas flight and travelling from Paris, is a sensible idea.  However, during the peak summer months we like (and need) to take a couple of evenings off and even though this is a very rural area, there are still several good restaurants within a fifteen minute drive of La Thiaumèrie.  We can make reservations at any of the restaurants for you and on Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays this is often vital.

Restaurant St Michel in Domjean is the closest, being less than 5 minutes drive from La Thiaumèrie. This is a lovely cosy little restaurant, serving traditional country cooking. The chef has won regional prizes for his apple tarts. Menus start at 15 euros and wines are extremely reasonable.  Closed Sunday evenings and Mondays and three weeks from around 21 August each year.

Le Chapeau Rouge is situated on the N175, which used to be the main route from Caen to the Bay Mont St Michel but is now a quiet backwater.  The menu has a Burgundian feel to it with meat in rich sauces and snails soaked in garlic. Pretty little restaurant with a very attentive hostess - closed Thursdays.

Le Papille'hot is a little bistro style restaurant in Beny Bocage (approx 10 miles) but is well worth the drive. The young couple who own the restaurant are keen to please and during July and August are open 7 days per week. Otherwise they close Sundays and Mondays. Unusually for this area they offer all of their menu as a la carte.

Villa Toscana is on the Saint Lo ringroad, about a 15 minute drive from La Thiaumèrie, serving excellent pizzas, along with a good variety of other Italian influenced dishes. Open on Sunday and Monday evenings!

La Grignotiere is just to the west of Saint Lo (about 16km from La Thiaumèrie) and serves typical French country cuisine, specialising in steaks cooked over a wood fire - even in summer! Closed Sunday evenings and Monday

Les Bruyeres is a great little restaurant backing onto the service station at Gouvets on the A84 but accessed via the N175.  This restaurant has a mixture of fixed price meus, a la carte and daily specials.  They are open Friday and Saturday evenings and every lunchtime except Tuesday throughout the year, Wednesday and Thurdday evenings in July and August.
